Ethiopia finalizes installation of power transmission to Djibouti, Sudan
April 26th, 2011
APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Ethiopia has finalized the installation of electric power transmission lines linking it with neighbouring Djibouti and Sudan in an ambitious programme to export power to these countries in near future, APA can confirm on Monday. Ethiopia had signed an agreement with the two countries to supply them power for a year.
According to media reports, Ethiopia plans to export power to neighbouring nations after the completion of Gibe III and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, launched recently with a 3.3 billion Euro self financed investment by the Ethiopian state.
Gilgel Gibe III project, being constructed with a hundred million dollar investment has the power to generate around 1,800 MW of power, which is expected to be finalized next year.
The Ethiopian Electric and Power Corporation (EEPCo.) said that the installation of the line stretching from Ethiopia to Kenya is also in progress, which will also help Ethiopia supply power to Kenya.
According to the corporation, neighbouring countries are keen to import renewable energy from Ethiopia because it is very cheap and most of them are utilizing energy sources that do not compound the problems of climate change.
Ethiopia has hydropower potential, which is estimated to be more than 45, 000 megawatts.
In the coming five years, the government plans to generate around 10,000 MW of power.
It was also reported that Ethiopia will export power to seven neighbouring countries after the completion of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which will be finalized within the next four or five years.
Egypt, Djibouti, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia and South Sudan are countries which Ethiopia may supply renewable energy.
The dam over the River Nile, the biggest in Africa, leaves Ethiopia and Egypt in diplomatic tension, sparking fear in Egypt that the Nile water flowing to Egypt whose agro-industry depends on the river may be jeopardised.
